Meet the Founder: The Story Behind Dubuc

Welcome to Dubuc, a brand built on creativity, individuality, and the belief that fashion should feel as unique as the person wearing it.

My name is Jaycee, and I am the founder, designer, pattern maker, and seamstress behind Dubuc. Every piece you see begins as an idea in my mind before being carefully brought to life in my home studio. While saying that fashion has always been my passion might sound cliché, it is the truth. Fashion has shaped how I express myself, how I view creativity, and ultimately the path I chose to build my life around.

My journey into fashion began in high school when I enrolled in a textiles class as an elective. At the time, I had no idea that walking into that classroom would completely change the direction of my life. What started as a simple class quickly became an obsession. I was fascinated by the process of turning a flat piece of fabric into something wearable. I spent every spare moment in the classroom, experimenting with new techniques, learning how garments were constructed, and creating anything I could imagine.

Unlike many designers, I did not attend fashion school. Everything I know has been self-taught through years of practice, experimentation, mistakes, and determination. Looking back, I am grateful for that journey because it taught me to trust my instincts and develop my own approach to design. Every challenge became an opportunity to learn, and every project pushed me to improve my skills.

To this day, I still approach fashion with the same curiosity I had as a teenager. I love learning new techniques, trying new silhouettes, and challenging myself creatively. Fashion is constantly evolving, and so am I.

The Inspiration Behind Dubuc

Dubuc was created from a desire to bring something different to the Canadian fashion landscape.

I have always been drawn to European street style. There is something effortlessly cool about the way people in Europe dress. They are not afraid to mix colours, prints, textures, and silhouettes that might seem unexpected at first glance. Somehow, the result feels natural, confident, and completely authentic.

What inspires me most is the freedom. European fashion often feels less focused on fitting into a specific category and more focused on expressing personality. One person might pair a tailored blazer with sneakers. Another might mix bold patterns with vintage accessories. The beauty lies in the individuality.

That philosophy has become a foundational part of Dubuc.

I believe fashion should be playful. It should be expressive. It should allow you to experiment with different versions of yourself without feeling confined by trends or expectations.

Life is constantly changing, and so are we. Our moods shift. Our interests evolve. The places we go influence how we feel. The people we surround ourselves with inspire us in different ways. Why should our wardrobes remain static?

Some mornings, you wake up wanting to wear something soft and feminine. Other days, you want something bold and artistic that turns heads when you walk into a room.

When I design, I often think about the woman who wears Dubuc.

She is intentional with her choices.

She values quality over quantity and prefers investing in pieces she truly loves rather than filling her closet with things she will wear once. She appreciates craftsmanship and notices the little details that make something special.

She starts her morning with a coffee or tea in a mug she loves. She enjoys slow mornings whenever possible and finds joy in simple rituals.

She stays active, not because she is chasing perfection, but because movement helps her feel her best. She attends Pilates classes, goes for long walks, explores local trails, and prioritizes her physical and mental well-being.

She loves gathering with friends for a beautiful dinner, sharing a bottle of wine, or enjoying a perfectly made martini. She appreciates meaningful conversations and memorable experiences.

She is curious and creative. She visits museums, attends theatre performances, browses independent bookstores, and seeks inspiration wherever she goes.

She gravitates toward unique pieces rather than whatever happens to be trending at the moment. Whether it is clothing, accessories, home décor, or art, she wants items that tell a story.

Most importantly, she understands that personal style is about self-expression, not fitting in.

Intention Over Consumption

One of the most important values behind Dubuc is the idea of intention over consumption.

The fashion industry often encourages us to buy more, own more, and constantly chase the next trend. Clothing is frequently treated as disposable, worn only a handful of times before being forgotten.

I wanted to build something different.

I believe every piece in your wardrobe should earn its place. Whether it holds sentimental value, serves a practical purpose, or simply makes you feel incredible when you wear it, it should mean something.

A thoughtfully curated wardrobe often contains fewer pieces, but each piece works harder. You reach for it again and again because it fits beautifully, feels comfortable, and aligns with your personal style.

This philosophy influences every decision I make when creating Dubuc collections.

Rather than designing clothing that follows fast-moving trends, I focus on creating pieces that can become lasting favourites. Pieces that feel relevant today and years from now. Pieces that move with you through different seasons of life.

Fashion should be an investment in yourself, not a temporary distraction.

Why Made-to-Order Matters

Every Dubuc piece is designed and made to order.

This approach is deeply important to me because it allows for a more thoughtful and sustainable way of creating clothing.

Traditional fashion production often relies on large quantities of inventory being manufactured months in advance. If those items do not sell, they frequently end up heavily discounted, discarded, or sent to landfill.

Made-to-order production allows Dubuc to operate differently.

Each garment is created because someone genuinely wants it. This reduces waste, minimizes excess inventory, and allows me to focus on quality rather than quantity.

It also gives me greater creative flexibility. If a fabric isn’t resonating in one design, it can often be repurposed into something entirely new. Rather than being locked into large production runs, I can adapt, experiment, and ensure materials are used thoughtfully.

For me, sustainability is not about perfection. It is about making intentional choices wherever possible and building a business model that aligns with my values.

A Brand Built by Hand

One of the things that makes Dubuc special is that every piece passes through my hands.

From initial concept sketches and fabric selection to pattern development, cutting, sewing, and finishing details, each garment is created in my home studio in Mission, British Columbia.

There is something incredibly rewarding about being involved in every step of the process. It allows me to maintain a high standard of quality while staying closely connected to the garments I create.

It also allows me to stay connected to my customers.

Listening to customer feedback is one of the most valuable parts of running Dubuc. Every conversation provides insight into what women are looking for, how they want to feel in their clothing, and how I can continue improving.

I am not interested in creating products simply to make a sale. My goal is to create pieces that genuinely resonate with the people who wear them.

When someone chooses a Dubuc piece, they are supporting a small business, a creative dream, and a garment that has been thoughtfully designed from start to finish.
